The excerpt above is a segment of the treaty that surrenders the Kingdom of Granada, the last kingdom that was under control by the Muslim Moors in the Iberian Peninsula. Beginning in the early 8th century the Reconquista was an effort by Christians to take back the Iberian Peninsula from invading Muslim Moors. Over the next few centuries Christian forces that soon became the Spanish kingdoms led the efforts to take back the peninsula. This was finally fully achieved in 1492 with the capture of Grenada. With the successful campaign of the Reconquista, Spain under the rule of Ferdinand and Isabella could now focus on exerting its influence abroad. It is not a coincidence that in that same year Columbus was sponsored by Spain to sail West in order to find a new route to Asia.
