              <text>The Anatomy Theater in Padua was the first permanent anatomical theater in the world, and it remains preserved today. The room is cylindrical, built on two overlapping floors, with the entrance on the first floor. Surrounding the central table on the lowest level, where the demonstrations would have been performed, are circular tiers with railings for the observers. The design ascends this way so that students in the upper levels can see the dissection just as well as those on the lower levels, with an unencumbered view (Longoria). Being the first of its kind, Padua's anatomical theater became the archetype for all the following iterations of the theaters constructed in the 17th century. &#13;

The anatomy theater is a prime example of functional architecture, an invention whose advent was brought on by necessity. Dissections were a well-established part of anatomical education by the late 16th century; the first public dissection in Europe took place in 1315 (Ghosh), and there was an increasing focus on direct observation over theoretical studies in the study of anatomy. As the movement toward active involvement in anatomical education grew, it became necessary to change the venue––the private homes that had hosted these dissections for so long could no longer accommodate the influx of students. The anatomy theater was designed with this problem in mind, hence the tiers and the amphitheatrical structure that made it much easier to effectively instruct a greater number of students with little impediment (Longoria). Padua also had a strong history of the practice of dissection since the late 13th century, so it was natural that the invention of the anatomical theater would take place there. &#13;

The anatomy theater was thus a creation of the Scientific Revolution, as it was designed with the express purpose of bettering and expanding scientific education. Considering the extent to which it was adopted, anatomical theaters seem to have provided an effective solution for demonstrating a dissection for a large number of students without impediment.</text>
